The departure-day trap: You topped up for buses and subways, then discovered ₩62,000 left while checking in. The card may work perfectly, yet the nearest store is not obliged to process that amount. The problem is the refund channel's limit, not whether T-money is refundable at all.
Choose your next step by balance
| Your situation | Practical next step |
|---|---|
| Small balance, still in Seoul | Use it for remaining transit or an accepting shop; ask a designated convenience store if you want cash back. |
| More than ₩50,000 | Plan a visit to T-money Town near Seoul Station before heading to the airport; confirm hours and your card type first. |
| Already at airport | Ask an authorized counter about this specific card and amount. If it cannot help, spend what you reasonably can or keep the card for a future visit. |
The official T-money guide says the refund is paid in Korean won, the purchase price of the card is excluded, and a ₩500 service charge applies. Location limits differ. Do not mistake a shop's ability to sell or top up T-money for a promise to refund any balance.
Before you leave Seoul: the safer sequence
- Check the actual balance and product. Identify whether it is ordinary T-money stored value. An EZL card, WOWPASS wallet, or transit pass has its own rules.
- Reserve your final fare. If you still need a bus or train, do not empty the card before that trip unless you have another payment method.
- If the balance exceeds ₩50,000, check T-money Town first. VisitKorea names the location near Seoul Station Exit 10 for balances above that level. Verify its current hours before making a detour.
- For a smaller balance, ask the location about its own ceiling. Convenience-store chains and subway service points do not necessarily handle identical amounts.
What if you are already at Incheon?
Do not miss check-in to chase a speculative refund. If time permits, show the physical card at an authorized service point and ask: “Can you refund the remaining balance on this T-money card, and what is the maximum amount here?” The answer depends on your card and that counter's service. For a large amount, the official Seoul Station option may be impractical once you have reached the terminal.
Using the card for eligible purchases can reduce a small remainder. T-money's own guide says it can be used at participating convenience stores; acceptance varies by merchant and product. Cash refund and spending the balance are different transactions. Do not promise yourself that airport duty-free, an airline desk, or every shop will accept it.
Three amounts, three different decisions
₩4,000 left, one airport journey ahead: Keep the card for that journey. If some balance survives, weigh the ₩500 refund fee against keeping the card.
₩25,000 left, a day before departure: Ask an authorized refund location about its threshold and hours, or use part of the balance. Do not assume all convenience stores have the same limit.
₩62,000 left, already past airport check-in: The official guidance points balances above ₩50,000 toward T-money Town near Seoul Station. Ask airport staff about any applicable service, but prioritize your flight and keep the physical card if you cannot resolve it.
Card price, combined cards and partial refunds
The purchase price of the physical card is separate from its stored balance and is not returned under the standard balance-refund process. The T-money guide describes partial refunds at T-money Town and designated subway service centers with restrictions, including increments for certain card types. Ask for the procedure appropriate to your exact card rather than asking a store cashier to return only part of a large balance.
If you carry a combined tourist product, check which balance you mean. The transit chip and a separate app wallet or pass benefit may follow different refund policies. This guide concerns ordinary physical T-money stored value, not the purchase price of a Discover Seoul Pass or a WOWPASS currency balance.
